- Embolic Risk Score (Infective Endocarditis): Explanation and Clinical Context
The Embolic Risk Score is a validated tool used to estimate the likelihood of systemic embolism in patients with infective endocarditis. It is based on six clinical variables: age > 70 years, diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, previous embolic events, vegetation length > 10 mm, and Staphylococcus aureus infection.
Each positive variable contributes 1 point to the total score, which stratifies patients into low, moderate, high, or very high embolic risk categories. This helps clinicians identify patients who may benefit from closer monitoring, early surgical intervention, or anticoagulation strategies.
