FAST Score (PE Right Ventricle Strain) Calculator
- FAST Score: Explanation and Clinical Context
The FAST Score (Focused Assessment of Right Heart Strain in Pulmonary Embolism) is a simple risk stratification tool to assess the probability of adverse outcomes in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) exhibiting right ventricular (RV) strain.
It assigns 1 point for each of the following: heart rate > 100 bpm, hypotension (systolic blood pressure < 100 mmHg), and echocardiographic evidence of RV dysfunction.
The total score ranges from 0 to 3, stratifying patients into low (0 points), intermediate (1 point), or high risk (2–3 points) categories.
FAST Score helps clinicians identify PE patients at higher risk of hemodynamic compromise or short-term mortality, guiding decisions regarding close monitoring, thrombolytic therapy, or escalation of care.
